A rich, creamy homemade hot chocolate recipe made with real chocolate, cocoa powder, and milk. Cozy, comforting, and miles better than any powdered mix! Perfect for chilly days, holiday mornings, or any time you need a chocolatey hug in a mug.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk (or any milk of choice)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped semi-sweet or dark chocolate 
(or chocolate chips)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows, for topping
 (optional)

Tools Needed

  • Small to medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Ladle for serving
  • Mug
  • Serving bowls

Preparation

    Heat the Milk In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk until steaming but not boiling.

    Add Cocoa & Sugar Whisk in cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Continue whisking until completely smooth and the cocoa is dissolved.

    Melt the Chocolate Add chopped chocolate and whisk until fully melted and the mixture is creamy and smooth.

    Finish & Serve Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or shaved chocolate if desired.
